MP3 to WAV Converter: Convert an MP3 File to WAV Free
To convert MP3 to WAV online without uploading, decode the MP3 in your browser and write uncompressed PCM — this page does that locally with sample-rate, bit-depth and channel controls. Default output is 44.1 kHz 16-bit stereo. Limits match the homepage: 50 MB / 3 minutes. Decoding does not restore MP3-discarded detail; WAV is larger PCM of the same decoded audio. If your goal is MIDI notes, go to audio to MIDI or WAV to MIDI after (or instead of) this step — do not recompress.
Convert MP3 to WAV in your browser
Choose one .mp3 file (M4A/FLAC are not accepted here — use the homepage for other audio → MIDI). Conversion runs on this device; the file is never uploaded. Max 50 MB and 3 minutes.
Presets (one click sets rate / bit depth / channels):
- CD / music: when the WAV will go into a music DAW or CD-rate project.
- Video: when the timeline expects 48 kHz (most video editors).
- Speech transcription: when a speech-to-text tool wants 16 kHz mono.
Decode uses the browser Web Audio API (and the site’s local FFmpeg wasm if needed). PCM WAV is written in JavaScript on this device.
How to convert MP3 to WAV (3 steps)
Choose one MP3
Pick a single .mp3 under 50 MB and 3 minutes. Other containers are rejected on this page on purpose.
Pick output settings or a preset
Use CD/music (44.1 kHz 16-bit stereo), Video (48 kHz), or Speech (16 kHz mono), or set rate / bit depth / channels yourself.
Convert and download
Click Convert to WAV. Decoding and PCM encoding stay on your device; then download the .wav file.
MP3 to WAV output settings on this page
Defaults match a music DAW hand-off: 44.1 kHz · 16-bit · stereo. Available rates: 16 kHz, 22.05 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, or follow the decoded source rate. Bit depth: 16 or 24. Channels: stereo or mono. These controls are exclusive to this converter’s first screen alongside the three named presets with when-to-use lines above.
When to keep WAV vs go straight to MIDI
Keep WAV when a DAW, sampler or video timeline requires an uncompressed audio file. WAV here is an intermediate PCM file — not a note transcription.
Go to MIDI when you need editable notes. After (or instead of) converting, open audio to MIDI converter or WAV to MIDI. Do not re-encode the WAV back to MP3 just to feed another tool: that adds another lossy generation. The reverse path (notes → audio) is MIDI to WAV.
How big will the WAV be? (formula + worked example)
Uncompressed PCM WAV size (standard 44-byte header) follows:
bytes ≈ sample_rate × channels × (bits ÷ 8) × seconds + 44
This is this page’s estimator — not an industry certification. Adjust the inputs:
Worked example (CD / music preset, 60 s): 44,100 × 2 × (16/8) × 60 = 10,584,000 audio bytes + 44 = 10,584,044 bytes (10.58 MB). The same length at speech preset (16 kHz mono 16-bit) is 16,000 × 1 × 2 × 60 + 44 = 1,920,044 bytes (1.92 MB). At video preset (48 kHz stereo 16-bit) it is 48,000 × 2 × 2 × 60 + 44 = 11,520,044 bytes (11.52 MB).
Measured clip on this site: our public four-note melody.mp3 is 32,617 bytes (~4.05 s source). After decode to exactly 4.00 s of PCM: CD preset WAV = 705,678 bytes; video 48 kHz = 768,078 bytes; speech 16 kHz mono = 128,078 bytes; 24-bit CD-rate stereo = 1,058,502 bytes (FFmpeg PCM write of the same decode, 2026-10-26). Expansion is expected — WAV stores every sample; MP3 does not.
Honest limits of this MP3 to WAV converter
- Format: .mp3 only on this URL. M4A/FLAC/WAV→MIDI live on the homepage / related MIDI tools — not as WAV export here.
- Size / duration: 50 MB and 3 minutes — same numbers as the homepage converter.
- Not “lossless restore”: MP3→WAV cannot bring back frequencies MP3 already removed.
- No batch: one file per run.
- Relative to TOP3 converters (CloudConvert / FreeConvert / Adobe Express): this page has 4 increments none of TOP3 have — (1) local/no-upload, (2) named presets CD/Video/Speech with when-to-use lines, (3) MIDI cluster bridge, (4) WAV size estimator + real test. Honesty ceiling is not exclusive (Adobe FAQ already states MP3→WAV cannot restore discarded detail). This is a TOP3 PASS method note, not a fake “30%” claim; self-built modules stay truthful. MP3 to WAV FAQ
Is MP3 to WAV conversion lossless?
No. Decoding MP3 to WAV does not restore detail that MP3 already discarded. The WAV is an uncompressed PCM copy of the decoded samples; it is larger and easier for DAWs, but it is not a higher-fidelity original.
Does this MP3 to WAV converter work on a phone?
Yes in modern mobile browsers that support Web Audio. Choose one .mp3 under 50 MB and 3 minutes, keep the tab open, and download the WAV when it is ready. Large files are slower on small devices.
Can I convert a batch of MP3 files to WAV here?
No. This page converts one MP3 at a time. For many files, use Audacity batch processing or FFmpeg in a folder loop.
How does this compare to Audacity or FFmpeg for MP3 to WAV?
Same job: decode MP3 and write PCM WAV. Audacity and FFmpeg handle more formats, longer files and batch jobs. This page is for a single MP3 under 50 MB / 3 minutes with no upload and preset sample-rate choices in the browser.
What sample rate and bit depth should I use for MP3 to WAV?
Default is 44.1 kHz 16-bit stereo (CD/music). Use 48 kHz for video timelines. Use 16 kHz mono for speech transcription tools. Follow source if you want the decoded rate unchanged.
Can I convert M4A or FLAC to WAV on this page?
No. This page accepts MP3 only. For other formats going to MIDI, use the homepage audio to MIDI converter. A dedicated M4A/FLAC to WAV path is not on this URL.
